Ionactis liniariifolia is called the flaxleaf aster, or the flaxleaf ankle-aster. Small statured and drought tolerant, the flaxleaf aster has a bushy growth habit and slender, stiff leaves. Unless in bloom, you wouldn't spot it's a relative of the well known fall-blooming asters (Symphyotrichum and Eurybia).
The flaxleaf aster blooms late in the season with dainty lavender daisy-like blooms with yellow centers. It grows in dry to average soils with sandy or rocky texture, including on inclines, and even in rocky crevasses. The plant can potentially be kept in porous ceramic pots for container gardening.
Ionactis liniariifolia is not tolerant of moist, poor draining soils, or excessive shade or competition from taller plants. It's tolerant of clay soils so long as they are well draining. Plant this short aster with care, playing to its strengths of forgiveness with poor soils and drought prone areas.
